Consider the work triangle.
“Work triangle” is a phrase the kitchen designers use to describe the path between the three essential points of your kitchen: the fridge, the stove, and the sink. While you’re cooking, these are the places in your kitchen where you most often need to stand. Therefore, you need a clear path to each of them. For example, if you want to add a kitchen island, you want to ensure that it is not in the way of any of those points.
You can’t have too much counter space.
If you ask anyone what they don’t like about their kitchen, they will probably say that they don’t have enough counter space. When you’re designing your new kitchen, think about what needs to live on your counter. Do you use your toaster oven all the time, or infrequently enough that it can have a place in the cabinet? Can you mount your microwave over the stove? If you can extend the counter or add another surface, you’ll be grateful for it.
Don’t stress about the small stuff.
There are some things that are easy to change and some that are not. Don’t stress yourself out worrying about what color to paint the walls. It’s easy enough to repaint later. On the other hand, replacing your countertops is an expensive and time-consuming undertaking. You should take your time selecting the material and color you want there. Make a list of everything you need to do in your new kitchen. Categorize all those items into “stuck with it” or “easy to change” decisions, and then prioritize the “stuck with it” category.
